Why This Model
The CTX 3030 runs FBS 2, Minelab's Full Band Spectrum engine that transmits frequencies from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz at the same time and talks to the coil digitally, which is why Minelab calls the CTX 11 a smart coil. The payoff is on the screen: Smartfind 2 plots every target on two axes at once, ferrous character (FE 1 to 35) against conductivity (CO 1 to 50), in color, and Target Trace paints the target's whole history across the screen as you sweep it. In an iron-infested homesite the Ferrous-Coin separation setting shows both cursors when a coin is sitting on top of a nail, which is the difference between digging that signal and walking past it. Ten search modes (five factory presets, Coins, Beach, Relics, Silver and High Trash, plus five user slots) each hold two discrimination patterns, and the Detect button flips between them mid-swing: a tight coin pattern for the sweep, an open pattern to check the edges of a signal.
Minelab's other current multi-frequency flagships answer different questions. The Manticore is the Multi-IQ+ machine: lighter by more than two pounds, rated to 16 ft (5 m), with its own 2D ID Map, and no GPS. The Equinox 900 is the value multi-frequency pick with two coils in the box, and no GPS. The Excalibur II is the dive machine, rated to 200 ft (60 m), with no screen at all. The CTX 3030 is the one you buy when the site itself is the project: a beach you work every low tide, a camp you survey over a season, a permission where you need to prove to yourself (or the landowner) where the finds came from. It records the hunt, not just the target.
Dealer pages sell this detector as "wireless headphones included" and stop there. Here is the precise version, straight from Minelab's manual and product page: the KOSS UR30 headphones in the box are wired, 100 ohm, and not waterproof. The wireless part is the WM 10 WiStream module, also in the box, which you clip to your belt and plug the UR30 (or any headphones you own) into, with no perceivable delay on any of its 14 channels. The WM 10 is not waterproof either, and it stops working once the control box goes under, so submerged hunting means Minelab's waterproof headphones on the detector's waterproof connector. We would rather you know that before you buy than after.

Who It's For
The CTX 3030 belongs with the beach hunter who works the same stretch every low tide and wants the productive lines mapped, the relic hunter surveying a camp or homesite over a season, and the coin shooter who wants two-dimensional target ID rather than a single number. Minelab positions it for advanced users and serious hobbyists, and the five presets make the first hunt a switch-on-and-go affair while the 20 patterns, tone profiles and separation settings wait until you want them.
Honest limits, so nobody is surprised. It weighs 5.2 lb (2.36 kg), about twice a Manticore, so plan on a harness for long days. It has no gold prospecting mode; it finds gold rings and chains, not sub-gram nuggets in mineralized goldfields. Its 10 ft (3 m) rating makes it a wading and shallow-water detector, not a dive unit, and the WM 10, the supplied headphones and the 1/4 in (6.35 mm) headphone module are not waterproof at all. XChange 2, the mapping software, runs on Windows only; a Mac can still apply firmware by copying the file to the detector. The instruction manual's current revision is dated 2015 and the last firmware file is dated 2016: this is a mature platform, and no new features are coming by update. Keep the battery pack dry and its o-ring clean before every submersion; leaking alkaline cells void the warranty.

Is the Minelab CTX 3030 waterproof?
Yes, the control box, shafts and coil are waterproof to 10 ft (3 m), which covers surf, creeks and lake edges. Three things in the box are not waterproof: the WM 10 wireless module, the KOSS UR30 headphones and the 1/4 in (6.35 mm) headphone module. Buy the Manticore if weight and iron separation matter more: it runs Multi-IQ+ with its own 2D ID Map, weighs 2.9 lb (1.3 kg) against the CTX's 5.2 lb (2.36 kg), and is rated to 16 ft (5 m) against 10 ft (3 m). Both are multi-frequency and both handle salt beaches.
How does the GPS on the CTX 3030 work?
A u-blox Neo-6 GPS engine is built into the control box. Switch it on in Options (it is off from the factory), and the Map screen shows your position and GeoTrail at 10, 20 or 100 yards or meters per cell. One press stores a FindPoint or WayPoint, a GeoHunt records a whole session, and the Navigation Tool gives distance and direction back to any stored point. Everything transfers over USB to XChange 2 on a Windows PC for mapping and export. First fix is usually under 5 minutes.
How long does the battery last?
Minelab rates the Li-Ion pack at 13 hours with GPS, backlight and speaker all on, and charging takes up to 4 hours through the BC 10 from a wall outlet, a 12 V car socket or a 24 V truck socket. The replaceable 8 x AA cell pack in the box runs at least 7 hours on alkaline cells. Headphones save power compared with the speaker, and the backlight costs about 8 percent of the battery.
Can the CTX 3030 find gold?
Gold rings, chains and jewelry, yes; the CTX 3030 has recovered decades of beach gold for detectorists worldwide. It has no dedicated gold prospecting mode though: Minelab positions it for land, beach and shallow water treasure hunting, and its FBS platform favors coins and jewelry over sub-gram nuggets in mineralized goldfields. If nuggets are the goal, look at the Gold Monster 2000 or the GPX 6000; if beaches and parks are the goal, the CTX is at home.
Are there firmware updates, and does it work with a Mac?
Yes, the CTX 3030 is user-upgradable. XChange 2 (Windows only, version 1.8.7 released October 2023) can download and apply detector updates, or you can copy the update file onto the detector, which mounts as a USB drive named Minelab on a PC or a Mac. The last published detector firmware file is dated August 2016. Mac users can apply firmware that way but cannot run the XChange 2 mapping software.
