This is the question we get more than any other from a hunter who has already decided on Minelab: Manticore or Equinox 900? They share the same waterproof rating, the same wireless audio family, and the same maker's reputation, and they sit two rungs apart on the same ladder. The honest answer depends on your sites more than on the brochure, so this article gives you the facts side by side and then tells you which ground each one wins on. The short version is on our Equinox 900 vs Manticore compare page; this is the long version.
What they share
Both are simultaneous multi-frequency machines built on Minelab's Multi-IQ technology. Both are waterproof to 16 ft / 5 m with the control box included, both run an internal rechargeable battery charged over USB, both take software updates in the field, and both pair with Minelab's low-latency wireless headphones: the ML 85 ships with the 900 and the ML 105 ships with the Manticore. Both weigh within an ounce or two of each other, 2.8 lb / 1.27 kg for the 900 and 2.9 lb / 1.3 kg for the Manticore with its standard coil. Both have automatic, manual, and tracking ground balance. Neither is a bad choice. The differences are in the engine, the information on the screen, and what comes in the box.

The Manticore's argument: information
The Manticore was built for sites that have been hunted for decades, where every easy target is long gone and what remains is sitting next to a nail, under a bottle cap, or in a pocket of iron that makes a lesser machine chatter. Two things address that directly. Multi-IQ+ puts more transmit power into the ground, which helps on the deep and the faint. And the 2D Target ID Map with Target Trace draws a target's conductivity and its ferrous character on the same screen, so a signal that is really two targets, or a good target masked by iron, shows itself as a shape before you dig. On a linear ID scale those two cases read as one number. On the Manticore they read as two dots or a smear, and after a few hours you learn what the smear means.
The Manticore 2.0 software added the Stabiliser setting, an adjustment from 0 to 12 that calms the audio and Target ID in iron-falsing sites, and an Enhanced Goldfield mode for small gold. One trade-off worth knowing: the High Conductors mode in the All-Terrain group is a high-power setting by design, and Minelab states it reduces battery runtime by about an hour. The included ML 105 headphones are not waterproof; underwater hunting on either machine uses Minelab's wired waterproof headphones.
The Equinox 900's argument: two coils and a real Gold mode
The 900 is the machine that made simultaneous multi-frequency the default recommendation for a decade, refined. It ships with two coils, the EQX11 for coverage and the EQX06 for tight, trashy ground, which means the two setups most hunters end up owning are solved on day one with no accessory purchase. It has a dedicated Gold mode and a 40 kHz single frequency for small gold, which makes it a genuine crossover for the hunter who wants one machine for coins, relics, beach, and the occasional trip to gold country. Its 119-segment Target ID is linear, but it is well proven, and the Iron Bias control from -1 to 9 gives you real say over how the machine treats ferrous targets. It is also the lighter and simpler of the two, and simple counts at hour six of a hunt.
Which one do you need?
Choose the Equinox 900 if you want the most capable all-round Minelab per dollar, you value two coils in the box, or gold prospecting is part of your year. It is the machine we hand most people who are stepping up from an entry-level detector and want to stop shopping for a while.
Choose the Manticore if your sites are picked over, iron-infested, or competitive, and the deciding factor is knowing more about a target before the shovel comes out. It costs more and ships with one coil, and for the hunter working hunted-out ground it earns both of those back in finds that a linear ID would have walked past.
A note for the buyer weighing coils: the two machines do not share them. The 900 runs the EQX coils and the Coiltek NOX line; the Manticore runs its own M-series coils and the Coiltek Mythtek. Everything that fits each machine is on its own page: what fits the Equinox 700 and 900 and what fits the Manticore.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Manticore deeper than the Equinox 900? Multi-IQ+ transmits with more power than Multi-IQ, and on deep or faint targets that matters. Depth in the field still depends on ground, coil, and settings, so treat it as an edge, not a different class.
Does the Equinox 900 have a gold mode? Yes, a dedicated Gold mode plus 40 kHz single frequency. The Manticore has a Goldfield mode, enhanced in the 2.0 update.
Can I use Equinox coils on the Manticore? No. The Manticore takes M-series coils only. The EQX coils fit the Equinox and the X-Terra Pro and Elite.
Are the headphones waterproof? No, on either machine. The ML 85 and ML 105 are wireless low-latency headphones for land use; submerged hunting uses wired waterproof headphones.
Which is better for beach hunting? Both are fully waterproof and both have Beach modes. The Manticore's four Beach modes include a Surf and Seawater mode and its Multi-IQ+ handles wet salt well; the 900's Beach mode is proven on the same ground. Serious surf hunters lean Manticore; everyone else is well served by either.
