Why the biggest blade earns its place
Depth per stroke is the Mordred's argument. An 11 in / 28 cm blade reaches farther into the hole with every cut than the 8 in / 20.3 cm standard spade or the 9 in / 23 cm Sir Kay WIDE, and because both long edges are toothed, the sawing does not stop as the blade sinks. Roots that cross your hole at any depth meet serration without repositioning. That combination, longest reach plus full-length teeth on both sides, is what the maker points at root-bound ground, and it is why relic hunters working wooded field edges, old farmsteads, and deep iron-era targets gravitate to this pattern.
It is deliberately the wrong tool for delicate work. A blade this size opens serious ground, so on manicured turf reach for the smooth-edged Arthur, in tight target-dense lots take the standard Sir Kay, and for single-edge technique the mirror pair of Lancelot and Galahad waits.
