Description
The VX9 is the top of Garrett's Vortex line, and the part most people miss is that the machine you buy today is not the machine you are stuck with.
Garrett Vortex VX9 at a glance
The Garrett Vortex VX9 is a fully submersible (16 ft / 5 m) multi-frequency metal detector with an 8.5 x 11 in / 22 x 28 cm DD Raider search coil, five single frequencies (5, 9, 13, 18, 25 kHz) plus Multi-Frequency and Multi-Salt modes, seven search modes, and a 3-tier MD-MF Target ID display. It weighs 3.0 lb / 1.38 kg and is Z-Lynk wireless ready. 3-year limited warranty.

The Vortex VX9 is Garrett's answer to a simple question: what if one detector could follow you from a dry hayfield to the surf line without you swapping machines? It is fully submersible to 16 ft / 5 m, so wet sand, a creek, or a chest-deep hole in the tide are all fair game, not warnings.
Underneath is Garrett's Multi-Dimensional Multi-Frequency (MD-MF) engine. You get five single frequencies (5, 9, 13, 18, and 25 kHz) for tuning to a specific target size, plus true Multi-Frequency and a dedicated Multi-Salt mode that reads through mineralized wet sand and saltwater where single-frequency machines stall. The standard 8.5 x 11 in / 22 x 28 cm DD Raider search coil covers ground quickly and still separates targets in trash.
Seven search modes (Zero, Standard, USA Coins, Thin Coins, Beach, Custom, and Fast) mean you are setting up for the site instead of fighting the detector. The 3-tier MD-MF Target ID display gives you two ferrous scales and a non-ferrous scale, so an iron-masked keeper looks different from a nail before you ever put a shovel in the ground. Thin Coins mode is there for the coin standing on edge; Fast mode is there for the trashy park nobody else finishes.
It is Z-Lynk wireless ready, so a set of Z-Lynk headphones drops the cable without the lag that makes wireless audio useless for detecting. At 3.0 lb / 1.38 kg on a stem that collapses from 24.75 in to 56.75 in / 62.9 to 144.1 cm, it packs down for travel and swings light for a full day.

Compare the Vortex platform: VX5 vs VX7 vs VX9
All three Vortex detectors share the same hardware: fully waterproof to 16 ft / 5 m, the same 8.5 x 11 in / 22 x 28 cm DD search coil, Z-Lynk wireless, 3 lb / 1.38 kg, and a 3-year warranty. What changes as you move up the line is capability: more frequencies, saltwater ability, more search modes, and finer target separation.

Which one is right for you? Choose the VX5 for dry-land coin, relic, and park hunting plus fresh water; it is the simplest to learn and the least expensive, but it is not built for saltwater beaches. Choose the VX7 if ocean beaches are in your plans: it adds the Multi-Salt mode, a deep-reading 5 kHz frequency, a 2-tier Target ID, and iron/bottlecap tools. Choose the VX9 for the full toolset: five single frequencies including 25 kHz for small gold and thin jewelry, a 3-tier Target ID that separates keepers from iron, and dedicated Thin Coins and Fast modes.
Because the hardware is identical across the line, a VX5 or VX7 can be moved up later with a paid Garrett software upgrade instead of a new detector. Starting lower is a floor, not a dead end. Buying the VX9 means you are already at the top of that ladder.
