Description
A dig knife you stop noticing is a dig knife you actually carry, and at about 313 g (11 oz) the Motley Grass Knife is one of the lightest detecting knives in the world. Most detecting knives make you choose: light enough for the pouch or stiff enough for packed clay-topped turf. Motley solved it in the steel, a cold pressed, heat treated tempered blade with cutting teeth on BOTH sides, so left and right handed diggers cut plugs with the same stroke instead of sawing backward with teeth facing the wrong way.
At a glance
The Motley Grass Knife is a metal detecting hand digger made in Europe from tempered, heat treated steel with a cold pressed blade. Weight is 312 to 315 g (about 11 oz). Total length 31.5 cm (12.4 in), blade width 6 cm (2.4 in), blade thickness 2.5 mm (0.1 in). Cutting teeth on both sides suit left and right handed users. Seven powder coated colors. Sheath not included.
Why the Grass Knife instead of a full shovel
This is the manicured-ground tool in the Motley line. On lawns, parks that allow digging, and short pasture, a full spade is overkill and draws attention; a hand knife cuts a tidy hinged plug that folds back invisibly. The Forest double-serrated shovel and Field V-point shovel are the step up for deep targets and rough ground; the Grass Knife is what stays on your belt every single hunt. The weight is the honest reason to pick it: after four hours of kneel-dig-recover cycles, 313 g (11 oz) is the difference between a tool and a burden.
Specs and what they mean in the field
| 312-315 g (about 11 oz), varies slightly by color | One of the lightest detecting knives made; rides on a belt all day unnoticed |
| Cold pressed, heat treated tempered steel | Stiff blade that pries plugs without flexing or taking a set |
| Cutting teeth on both sides | Left and right handed use; saw through roots on the pull or the push |
| 31.5 cm (12.4 in) total, 6 cm (2.4 in) blade, 2.5 mm (0.1 in) thick | Long enough for a full-depth plug, thin enough to slice clean edges |
| 3D hexagon laser cut design | Removes weight without removing strength; also how you spot a real Motley |
| Easy-grip handle with handle cover, 7 cm (2.8 in) handguard | Keeps a gloved hand off the teeth on hard stabs |
| CNC precision sharpened, cosmetic powder coating | Arrives field-ready; pick high visibility or camouflage in 7 colors |
