Why the PRO-Pointer II, and who it is for

Garrett sells the PRO-Pointer II alongside the AT for the hunter who does not need a submersible probe. What the II has in common with the AT is everything that finds the target: the same patented proportional audio and vibration, the same 360-degree side scan and tip detection, the same scraping blade, LED, lost alarm, auto-off, lanyard loop and 9 V power, the same 6.5 oz (0.2 kg) weight and the same 3-year warranty. What it lacks is the AT's 20 ft (6 m) waterproof rating (the II is IP66: rain, rinsing and a wet tip, not a dunking), the three sensitivity levels, the button Fast Retune (the II retunes with a quick power off and on) and the depth ruler. How to use it in the hole

• Switch it on away from metal. The probe tunes itself at turn-on; switched on next to the target, it can tune the target out.
• Scan the plug first. Pass the side of the probe over the plug and the dirt pile; the 360-degree side scan and the scraping blade let you rake and listen at the same time. Half the targets never need the hole.
• Then the hole. Probe the walls and the bottom with the tip; the audio and vibration pulse faster as the tip closes.
• Retune on purpose. Retune by a quick power off and on to tune out salt water, wet sand or mineralized ground. Switch it off and on over wet sand or hot ground so only the target speaks.
• Keep it found. Use the holster and the lanyard loop; if you set it down, the lost alarm starts chirping after five minutes.

The PRO-Pointer II is weatherproof, not submersible: rain and a rinse are fine, a dunking is not, and only the tip may go under. What is the lost-pinpointer alarm?

After five minutes without a button press, the pinpointer starts periodic warning chirps so you can find it in the grass or the sand; after 60 minutes of chirps it switches itself off to save the battery. The lanyard loop and the belt holster are the other half of not losing it.

Does the PRO-Pointer II work with any metal detector?

Can the PRO-Pointer II find gold?
