At a glance

The Minelab Gold Monster 1000 is a fully automatic 45 kHz VLF gold detector with 24-bit signal processing, two detect modes (Gold and Deep All Metal), Easy-Trak automatic ground balance, automatic noise cancel, and three sensitivity modes (Manual with 10 levels, Auto, and Auto+). GM05 5 in (13 cm) Double-D search coil, waterproof to 3.3 ft (1 m). 2.94 lb (1.33 kg). Two Li-ion batteries, wired headphones, and a Minelab digging shovel included. 2 year warranty on control box and coil.

The gold machine you can learn in ten minutes

Everyone tells you natural gold is the hardest thing to find with a metal detector, and they are right. Small nuggets hide in mineralized ground that makes ordinary detectors scream, and the classic gold machines demanded a season of tuning practice before they paid off. The Gold Monster 1000 was built to delete that learning curve: automatic ground balance, automatic noise cancel, and automatic sensitivity riding on a 45 kHz engine that hears sub-gram gold. Switch it on and hunt. We do not have to take Minelab's word for it, because we watched it happen.

Amber's first hour: 9 pieces of gold

While our team was gold prospecting at the AKAU Gold Camp in Nome, Alaska, Amber from the History Seekers team got her first lesson in metal detecting for gold. She was completely new to gold detecting, and the Gold Monster 1000 was the clear choice to hand her. Debbie Smikoski from Minelab was there, and we gave Amber a quick 10 minute lesson before turning her loose with it. Within the first hour she had recovered 9 pieces of gold. By the end of the trip her total stood at 118 pieces. Her new favorite gold detector is the Gold Monster 1000, she has since moved on to trying the Gold Monster 2000, and she has well and truly caught gold fever. Ask her why, and she points straight at how friendly both machines are to a brand-new user. Ten minutes of instruction, 118 pieces of gold: that is what fully automatic means in practice.

Why this is the beginner gold detector we recommend

The 45 kHz VLF frequency paired with a 24-bit signal processor is tuned for the small, sub-gram gold that lower-frequency coin machines walk right over. Easy-Trak ground balance monitors and adjusts to changing soil on its own, so mineralized ground does not turn into a wall of false signals. The Gold Chance Indicator gives you a live read on every target: the needle shifts right for gold-likely metals and left for ferrous trash and hot rocks, so you make faster digging decisions in trashy ground, backed by 50-segment discrimination and a separate ferrous volume control. And one honest point Minelab itself makes: the Gold Monster handles conductive, salty soils better than higher-frequency gold detectors, which matters more in real goldfields than a bigger kHz number on a spec sheet. When you want control, it is there: 10 manual sensitivity levels, plus Auto and the hotter Auto+ that adapts while pushing sensitivity to the edge.

What is in the box

Gold Monster 1000 detector with GM05 5 in (13 cm) Double-D round search coil, wired headphones, a genuine Minelab digging shovel, TWO rechargeable Li-ion battery packs, an AA battery adapter (8 AAs keep you hunting if both packs run down; AAs not included), a car battery charging cable, a universal AC adapter, and a rod-to-coil adapter for mounting the machine on alternate shafts in tight or remote spots. Two batteries, a shovel, and car charging in the box is remote-camp readiness most listings never mention. The GM 10 10x6 in (25x15 cm) elliptical coil is available separately when you want more coverage and depth.

Know before you buy

The search coil is waterproof to 3.3 ft (1 m) for creeks and wet ground, but the control box is rain-resistant only, never submerge it. Audio is wired: built-in speaker or the included headphones, no wireless. This is a dedicated gold machine with ferrous identification, not a coin and relic target-ID detector; if you want one machine for both jobs, call us and we will talk through the crossover options honestly.
