We were at the US launch in Mariposa, and we swung it on a real claim
History Seekers was fortunate enough to be invited to the GPZ 8000 US launch event in Mariposa, California, where we ran this detector on an actual working gold claim and in the test garden Minelab set up for the event. Two things stuck with us. First, the audio: the clarity through the Sennheiser HD 505 headphones is obvious the moment you put them on, and anyone who knows headphones will recognize that brand as top tier. Fitting that they partnered with Minelab on this detector. Second, the small gold: we were shocked at the clarity and depth it reached on even small pieces, most especially a 1 gram piece of gold at 8 in (20 cm) in mineralized soil. That is the target class that separates real gold machines from spec sheets, and we heard it plainly.
Why the 3 Coil Pack
The coils are not interchangeable accessories, they are three different tools, and Minelab's own manual maps when each one wins. The Z18 18 in (46 cm) is the depth coil: the best depth of the three, for large deep gold and maximum coverage in open country, and the coil the manual says to start with. The Z13 13 in (33 cm) is the precision coil: the most maneuverable, best in vegetation and tight spaces, with better interference handling than the Z18 for small to medium gold in shallower soils. The Z17 17 in (43 cm) is the escalation coil: built for high EMI and highly conductive soils, it makes ground detectable that defeats the other two. And here is the part we did not expect: at the Mariposa launch we ran the Z13 ourselves, and the sensitivity we observed makes it a genuine competitor even on small gold. From a detector designed to sniff out the large nuggets at depth, that kind of small-gold performance from the 13 in (33 cm) coil is the quiet surprise of this pack, and only the 3 Coil Pack puts it in the box. We did not get as much time on the Z17 as the other two, but the prospectors we talked with at the event felt it did better dealing with hot rocks, which fits exactly the job Minelab built it for. Who the 3 Coil Pack Is For
Best for: the prospector whose ground changes: deep open flats, conductive or interference-heavy patches, and brush-choked gullies on the same claim. Experience level: advanced. The GPZ 8000 has no discrimination and no target ID; you dig every signal, and the three coils let you keep hunting when the Z18 alone would send you home.
If your patches are open country and depth is the only question, the GPZ 8000 Single Coil Pack is the same machine with the Z18 only, and the Z13 and Z17 can be bought separately later. If you are new to natural gold, the Gold Monster 2000 is the lighter, simpler start, and the GPX 6000 is the faster all-day pulse induction machine. Ground Types and the Settings That Matter
The GPZ 8000 has no discrimination to tune; what you tune is how it hears the ground. The four Ground Types are the big lever, and the manual says which ground each one is for:
- Difficult Deep (the default): the stable all-round choice for mixed ground where mineralization and conductivity occur together and vary across the patch. If you are not sure which Ground Type to pick, the manual says to start here.
- Difficult High Yield: iron-rich, highly mineralized soil with low conductivity; stable, with good depth on small to medium gold. It handles conductivity poorly, so the manual reserves it for quiet conditions, shallow soil, or ground known to hold only small gold, paired with the Z13 or Z17.
- Normal Deep: quiet, consistent ground where conductivity is present but mineralization is low; very good depth on medium to larger gold.
- Normal Extra Deep: maximum depth on medium to large gold in benign, homogeneous, low-conductivity ground. The trade for that depth is poor handling of heavy mineralization and conductivity, so it belongs on quiet ground only, not everywhere.
Around the Ground Type: Sensitivity runs manual 1 to 10 plus Auto and Auto+, which let the detector set itself while you learn the audio; Noise Cancel sweeps 4096 channels automatically (128 channels when set by hand) and is the first thing to run near power lines or another detector; Quick-Trak ground balances in ten seconds; and the Mineralization Level readout is a prospecting tool in its own right, because the manual teaches reading its jumps as soil boundaries and building a map of where gold is likely to sit. Echo Sonic Pro sends different ground information to each ear, and the manual uses which ear gets noisy to tell you whether conductivity or mineralization is the problem and which Ground Type to move to.
Which Coil When: Z18, Z13, Z17
Minelab's manual maps the three Z-Set coils to conditions and gives an order to try them:
- Z18 18 in (46 cm): start here, every time you begin somewhere new or in deep soil. The best depth of the three and maximum coverage for large, deep gold in open country; the trade is that it is the most affected by EMI and the least suited to dense vegetation.
- Z13 13 in (33 cm): in shallow soil, or when conditions get too challenging for the Z18, change to the Z13. The most maneuverable coil, best among vegetation, obstacles and tight spaces, for small to medium gold, with better EMI handling than the Z18 and the least fatigue.
- Z17 17 in (43 cm): the all-rounder for high EMI and highly conductive ground. If conditions and interference are too severe for the Z18 and Z13, change to the Z17; it gives the best stability in EMI-heavy ground and good depth on small and medium gold.
All three are in this box, which is the point of the pack: the manual's own escalation, Z18 to Z13 to Z17, never means a second purchase.

Where the GPZ 8000 Works Well, and Where It Does Not
Mineralized and conductive goldfields: the ground GeoZVT and the Ground Types were built for. The Difficult types take iron-rich soil, Normal Deep takes quiet conductive ground, and the Z17 coil takes the interference nobody else can run in.
Worked-out patches: deep, large gold that earlier machines left behind is the GPZ 8000's reason to exist; the Z18 with Normal Extra Deep on quiet ground reaches it.
Shallow water: IP67 to 3.3 ft (1 m) for 30 minutes lets you follow a gully into a creek. It is not a dive machine, and the HD 505 headphones are not waterproof; only the headphone socket is, with the supplied curly cable locked in.
Brush and tight gullies: the Z18 is the wrong coil there; the Z13 is the one to fit. It is in this box.
Where it is the wrong buy: coins, relics and parks (there is no discrimination), a first gold detector for most people, and any job that needs a target ID.

The GPZ 8000 is a pure prospecting machine: there is no discrimination and no target ID, so plan on digging your signals. IP67 means creek crossings and rain, not diving, and the HD 505 headphones themselves are not waterproof. The detector battery requires a USB-C Power Delivery charger of at least 30 W (all included chargers qualify). Both the detector and the WM 14 are software-updatable over USB-C, so the machine grows with Minelab's firmware (no update has been published as of October 2026; the launch software is current).
