Description
Every single-frequency detector makes you choose. Set it low and it reaches deep silver but slides past a thin gold ring; set it high and it does the opposite; put it on wet salt sand and it chatters either way. The Minelab X-Terra Elite stops making you choose. Its Multi-IQ engine runs several frequencies at the same time, the same simultaneous multi-frequency idea that runs the Equinox, inside a body that is IP68 waterproof to 16 ft (5 m). It is also the X-Terra that buyers keep mixing up with its sibling: the X-Terra Pro is a selectable single-frequency machine, the Elite is the Multi-IQ one. If Multi-IQ is what you came for, this is the X-Terra you want.
Why This Model
Multi-IQ is the reason to buy an X-Terra Elite over any single-frequency detector in its class. Low frequencies carry depth on large targets, high frequencies wake up small ones, and Multi-IQ transmits and reads across that spread at once, so a small gold ring and a deep silver coin both read clearly on the same swing, and the Target ID holds steady on mineralized ground and wet salt sand where one frequency drifts. Park and Field run Multi-IQ or, when you want it, a single 15 kHz; Beach runs Multi-IQ only, because wet salt is exactly the ground one frequency struggles on.
Underneath the engine the Elite carries a full set of controls, not a stripped one: 25 sensitivity levels, six custom search profiles (two per mode) so a trashy park and a clean field each keep their own settings, recovery speed 1 to 3 for pulling coins out of nail beds, Iron Bias from -1 to 2 (Minelab's Iron Control), automatic, manual or tracking ground balance, and 30 discrimination segments across 119 Target IDs with a ferrous tone break. The X-Terra Pro shares the body, the coil, the 16 ft (5 m) rating and the 2.9 lb (1.3 kg) weight but runs one frequency at a time through Pro-Switch; the Elite is that same machine with the Multi-IQ engine. Minelab's Vanquish 460 and 560 also run Multi-IQ and cost less; the Elite buys 25 sensitivity levels where they have 10, six saved profiles where they have one, the 15 kHz single-frequency option, adjustable recovery speed and manual or tracking ground balance, plus a shaft that collapses to 25 in (63 cm) for the truck.
Two things you will read on other dealer pages deserve a plain answer. One large dealer lists wireless headphones in the base X-Terra Elite box; Minelab's box contents do not include headphones, and neither does ours. Headphones and a second coil come with the Expedition Pack. Another prints 129 Target IDs; the machine has 119 (ferrous -19 to 0, non-ferrous 1 to 99). We would rather you order from the true spec sheet than find out at the mailbox.

Choose the X-Terra Elite if Multi-IQ is the point and you already own headphones or are happy on the speaker. The Minelab X-Terra Pro is the pick when budget outranks multi-frequency. The Minelab X-Terra Elite Expedition Pack is the same detector with the V8X coil and ML 85 wireless headphones added, and it costs less than buying those two pieces later. Weighing the step up instead? Compare the X-Terra Elite and Equinox 700 side by side. Still deciding between the two X-Terras? Compare the X-Terra Pro and X-Terra Elite. Everything that fits both, coils to headphones, is on our X-Terra Pro and Elite accessories page, including the Minelab V8X 8 x 5 in (20 x 13 cm) coil and the Minelab V10X 10 x 7 in (25 x 18 cm) coil.
Who It's For
The X-Terra Elite belongs with the coin and relic hunter buying a first serious detector, the beach hunter who works wet sand and the surf line, the creek wader who wants the whole machine in the water, and the X-Terra Pro owner ready for multi-frequency without learning a new body. It is a beginner to intermediate machine: Park mode is ready to swing out of the box, and the six custom profiles are there when you want to tune.
Honest limits: it has no dedicated gold prospecting mode. Gold jewelry is bread-and-butter work for Multi-IQ, but natural nuggets in mineralized ground belong to the Minelab Equinox 900 with its Gold modes or the Minelab Gold Monster 2000. Multi-IQ is not user-tunable beyond the 15 kHz option in Park and Field, the display is a monochrome LCD rather than a color screen, and headphones are not in the box; wireless audio needs Minelab low-latency headphones such as the ML 85 or ML 105, or any wired pair through the 3.5 mm jack.

See it in the field
History Seekers hunts run on YouTube and Facebook, where over 1.1 million followers watch us dig relics, coins, and gold across the Southeast and beyond. We rotate machines depending on the site and the ground conditions, and every find you see was made with gear we sell and use ourselves.
One more thing worth knowing about who you are buying from. History Seekers is a small American business, not a big box retailer where nobody on staff has ever swung a detector, and not a warehouse that just moves boxes. Everyone here detects, from the top down: gold, relics, coins, jewelry, even float copper. Years of field experience before hire is not a coincidence, it is a requirement. The person who answers your questions may be the same one who packs your order and drives it to the UPS drop-off, and every purchase keeps everyday Americans working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Minelab X-Terra Elite waterproof?
Yes. The whole detector, control pod and coil included, is rated IP68 waterproof to 16 ft (5 m), so wet sand, the surf line, freshwater shallows and rain are all fair game. Beach mode runs Multi-IQ for stable IDs on wet salt sand. Wireless audio does not travel through water, so hunting with the pod submerged means wired waterproof headphones through the 3.5 mm jack or the built-in speaker above the surface.
X-Terra Elite vs X-Terra Pro: what is the difference?
The frequency engine. The X-Terra Elite runs Multi-IQ, Minelab's simultaneous multi-frequency technology from the Equinox, with a 15 kHz single-frequency option in Park and Field. The X-Terra Pro is not Multi-IQ; it runs one selectable frequency at a time through Pro-Switch (5, 10 or 15 kHz in Park and Field, 8 kHz in Beach). Both share the same body, V12X coil, 119 Target IDs, six custom profiles, IP68 rating to 16 ft (5 m) and 2.9 lb (1.3 kg) weight. If you want stable IDs on wet salt sand and small gold and deep silver on the same swing, choose the Elite; if budget outranks multi-frequency, the Pro.
Does the X-Terra Elite come with headphones?
No. The base X-Terra Elite ships with a built-in speaker, a wired 3.5 mm (1/8 in) headphone jack and support for Minelab low-latency wireless audio, but no headphones in the box. The X-Terra Elite Expedition Pack is the version that adds Minelab ML 85 wireless headphones and a second V8X coil.
What coils fit the X-Terra Elite?
It ships with the V12X 12 x 9 in (30 x 23 cm) Double-D elliptical coil with a skid plate. The Minelab V8X 8 x 5 in (20 x 13 cm) and V10X 10 x 7 in (25 x 18 cm) coils fit, and Minelab states the X-Terra Elite also accepts the Equinox-series EQX coils; Coiltek NOX coils built for that coil system fit as well. Coils from the classic X-Terra 305, 505 and 705 do not fit; that was a different coil system.
Can the X-Terra Elite find gold?
Gold jewelry, yes; Multi-IQ is strong on rings and chains in Park, Field and Beach modes. It has no dedicated gold prospecting mode, so natural nuggets in mineralized ground are better left to a machine built for them. Within Minelab, the Equinox 900 adds true Gold modes and the Gold Monster 2000 is the dedicated nugget hunter.
Does the X-Terra Elite get software updates?
Yes. The X-Terra Elite carries software that updates over the included USB charging and data cable with the Minelab Update Utility on a computer. As of September 2026 Minelab has published no separate X-Terra Elite update and states the Elite ships with the latest software; the update Minelab released for the X-Terra Pro applies only to the Pro.
What warranty does the X-Terra Elite carry, and is History Seekers an authorized dealer?
History Seekers Metal Detectors is an authorized Minelab dealer; every X-Terra Elite we sell is new, comes to us from Minelab's authorized US distributor, and carries the full 3-year Minelab warranty on the coil and control box. Register the detector with Minelab after purchase to keep the warranty record on file.
