Why the DEUS II Gold

This is XP's high-frequency configuration of the DEUS II. The included HF2 elliptical search coil runs 21 simultaneous frequencies from 9 to 90 kHz and reaches 120 kHz in single frequency, well above the 4 to 45 kHz range of the standard FMF search coils. In practice that means honest, repeatable signals on small gold nuggets, fine hammered coins, and thin jewelry that a general-purpose coil reads as ground noise. High frequency is also the edge-coin frequency: a coin standing on edge presents a thin profile that lower frequencies pass over, and the HF2 reads it. The narrow elliptical profile (9.5 x 5 in / 24 x 13 cm, 350 g / 12.3 oz) threads between nails to un-mask targets iron has been protecting for generations, and works rocky, uneven ground a round coil cannot sit flat on. Stereo Changes the Hunt: Check the Headphone Model Before You Compare

XP has discontinued its older non-stereo WSA II and WS6 headphones, but DEUS II packages built around them are still in circulation, and some listings label the headphones wrong. Check the model: this package includes the WSA ST, XP's current stereo generation. Only ST headsets run XP's V4 Stereo Multi-Processing: two fully independent detection channels at once. Run two different Reactivity settings simultaneously, one in each ear, fast separation for the nail beds in one channel and deep-and-slow in the other. In XP's own words, it eliminates the compromise between depth and target separation. On an iron-choked cellar hole, that is like working the site twice in a single pass. The older headphones will never run these features. At this level of the hobby, buy the current machine once instead of the discontinued one twice.

DUAL AXIS preset: sizing, shape, and unexpected depth. A factory preset of XP's V4 Multi-Process firmware. One ear runs your discrimination program while the other runs a non-motion all-metal channel with a wider detection footprint. On old homesites that second channel tells you whether the signal under the nails is a big iron plate or a coin-sized keeper before you dig, and it hears deep targets standard motion programs miss.

Multi-Processing and Audio Morphing (Firmware V4). Multi-Reactivity runs a fast, trash-separating profile in one ear and a deep, slow profile in the other. Audio Morphing shifts the tone character as the search coil closes in on a target, so you read depth and proximity by ear without looking at the screen. XP's current DEUS II firmware is V4.1; updates are free through XP's online updater, and the headphones must run the same version as the remote.

Gold or FMF: Which DEUS II Package Do You Need?

The Gold is a specialist. The HF2 search coil gives up two things to earn its small-target response: coverage, because a 9.5 x 5 in (24 x 13 cm) footprint sweeps less ground than an 11 in (28 cm) or 13x11 in (34x28 cm) coil, and the lowest frequencies, because the HF2 band starts at 9 kHz while the FMF coils run down to 4 kHz for large, deep, high-conductivity targets. If most of your hunting is open parks, farm fields and sparse beaches, a DEUS II with an FMF search coil is the better buy. All four packages below share the same remote, the same 12 factory programs and the same WSA ST stereo headphones; only the coil changes.

Settings That Matter on the DEUS II

The DEUS II has twelve factory programs and more adjustment than most detectors at any price, and the fastest way to get lost is to change five things at once. Pick the factory program for the site, learn how it sounds, then move one setting at a time. These are the controls that change results, with the ranges and factory values printed in XP's own manual:

• Program first. GENERAL (Prg 1) subtracts wet-soil signals so coke and damp ground go quiet; SENSITIVE (2) and SENSI FT (3) reach 40 kHz for the smallest targets in iron and mineralization; FAST (4) is SENSITIVE with Pitch audio and Reactivity 3 for ferrous-choked ground; PARK (5) notches 23 to 35 for foil and sets B.Caps to 2 for rusty caps; DEEP HC (6) adds the low frequencies to 14 kHz for coin clusters and deep high conductors; DEUS MONO (7) is one frequency, anywhere from 4 to 45 kHz, for sites where interference beats multi-frequency; GOLD FIELD (8) and RELIC (9) run all-metal with ground grabbing; DIVING (10), BEACH (11) and BEACH SENS (12) subtract conductive salt. XP's manual: test a program in the soil, not in the air.
• Sensitivity (0 to 99; factory 90 to 95 per program; XP says most hunters run 70 to 90): run as high as the ground and the interference allow, and lower it near power lines, fences and in trash before you touch anything else.
• Reactivity (0 to 5; factory GENERAL 2, SENSITIVE and PARK 2.5, FAST and SENSI FT 3, GOLD FIELD 2, RELIC 1, DIVING 1, BEACH and BEACH SENS 0): XP's recovery speed. Low (0 to 1) for large deep masses and widely spaced beach targets; 2 to 2.5 for general ground; 3 to 5 for iron-contaminated or mineralized sites. The manual's own relic trick is Reactivity 0 with the coil swept 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) above the ground.
• Discrimination (-6.4 to 99; factory 6.1 to 10): XP recommends leaving it low (around 8) and judging by the target ID, the tones and B.Caps rather than rejecting high. Below 0 opens the ground zone for the deepest ferrous-adjacent signals.
• B.Caps (0 to 5; PARK 2, others 0): rejects rusty bottle caps that read as good targets; the manual recommends it on beaches and parks whenever caps are a nuisance.
• Silencer (-3 to 7; factory 1 to 3) and Iron Volume (0 to 10; factory 7): the first filters the residual spikes of large or odd-shaped iron at the cost of masking good targets beside it; the second sets how loud iron is allowed to be.
• Audio Response (0 to 7; factory 4, GOLD FIELD 7): amplifies the sound of deep targets. XP's manual says it plainly: it gives the impression of more power but adds no depth; lower values give a truer sense of depth.
• Ground (grab or manual 60 to 90, tracking on or off) and Ground Stabilizer (1 to 3; factory 2, PARK 3): grab the ground where you hunt, re-grab when it changes, and use Stabilizer 3 when the soil keeps talking. Level 1 opens the expert zone above your ground value for the deepest masked signals; in DEUS MONO it is fixed at level 1.
• Salt Sens (1 to 9; DIVING and BEACH 9, BEACH SENS 7), Frequency Max (14 to 40 kHz by program on the FMF coils, 29 to 89 kHz with the HF2) and Threshold (0 to 20): the beach and gold controls. Lower Salt Sens before you lower sensitivity on wet sand; lower Frequency Max to 14 kHz in RELIC for big deep targets; use the threshold in GOLD FIELD and RELIC to hear the faintest change.
• Frequency scan first. Before blaming the ground for chatter, run the scan to move the detector off the interfering frequency, then set sensitivity.

What Fast Multi Frequency and Multi-Process do not do. FMF does not make ground balance optional: GOLD FIELD and RELIC want regular grabbing, and the beach programs want Salt Sens set to the sand. Multi-Process is audio processing in the ST headphones, two reactivities heard at once in one swing; it is not a second detector in the ground and it does not change what the coil sees. Audio Response, in XP's own words, provides no additional depth. Whether a signal repeats from two directions still decides the dig.

Who the DEUS II Gold HF2 Is For, and Who Should Buy Something Else

Best for: small gold in mineralized ground and small or masked targets on hammered homesites, with the HF2 coil running GOLD FIELD to 89 kHz; relics and coins elsewhere. Experience level: intermediate to advanced, and usable by a motivated beginner in the twelve factory programs; XP's ICON X and ICON are the simpler, lower-cost step down inside the brand. Step up inside XP: the Xtrem Hunter XTR-115E, which runs from this remote, for deep large targets.

Two kinds of serious detectorists. First, gold prospectors who need maximum response on small nuggets in mineralized ground. Second, relic and coin hunters working heavily iron-laden sites: colonial homesites, cellar holes, and any pounded spot where the remaining targets are masked by iron or standing on edge. If you mostly hunt open parks and fields, the standard DEUS II FMF package is the better fit; the Gold earns its keep where targets are small, masked, or on edge and the ground is hard. It is an advanced machine: the depth of the menu rewards the hunter who will learn it.

Where the DEUS II Works Well, and Where It Does Not

Trashy parks and hammered ground: PARK, SENSITIVE and FAST were tuned for it: the 23 to 35 notch takes out foil, B.Caps takes out rusty caps, and Reactivity 2.5 to 3 separates a coin from the pull tab beside it. The 9 in (22.5 cm) coil threads the nail beds; technique still does the finding, and no detector turns a worked-out park back into a fresh one.

Plowed fields and old homesites: GENERAL's wet-soil subtraction is why coke and damp dirt go quiet on this platform, SENSI FT's full tones read iron-choked cellar holes, and DEEP HC pulls coin clusters and deep high conductors out of clean ground. The wireless coil, remote and headset add up to the lightest machine you can walk a forty-acre permission with.

Beaches, surf and diving: three salt programs: DIVING for the stablest wet-sand and underwater work, BEACH to 24 kHz for small targets in wet zones, BEACH SENS to 40 kHz, the deepest wet-sand program and the most reactive. Coil and remote are IP68 waterproof to 20 m (66 ft); the remote reaches that depth only with its red 20 m cap fitted (the gray cap is good to 1 m), the coil needs the aerial antenna when it is submerged, and the ST headphones are rainproof, not dive gear, so under water you run the BH-01 bone conduction set.

Relic ground and deep masses: RELIC is GOLD FIELD processing at lower frequencies with conductive-soil subtraction, built for large deep targets. The manual's method is to sweep 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) above the ground, drop Reactivity to 0 and, if you want, Frequency Max to 14 kHz, and dig the long sounds.

Gold country: GOLD FIELD runs all-metal with ground grabbing and IAR discrimination for surface iron, reaching 40 kHz on the FMF coils; the HF2 package pushes the same program to 89 kHz for smaller gold. In the worst mineralization a pulse induction machine reaches deeper on large gold; XP's own answer for deep large targets is the Xtrem Hunter, which runs from this remote.

Interference-heavy sites: DEUS MONO gives you any one of 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz when the simultaneous programs cannot hold still near power lines or another detector; run the frequency scan first.

Where it is the wrong buy: for someone who wants a switch-on-and-go machine (XP's ICON X and ICON are the simpler, lower-cost step inside the brand), for a diver expecting to wear the ST headphones under water, or for a nugget-only prospector in extreme ground who should be looking at pulse induction.

The DEUS II runs XP's wireless FMF coils, and which coil when is the first decision: the 9 in (22.5 cm) FMF coil for iron-heavy homesites, trashy parks, woods and cellar holes; the 11 in (28 cm) FMF coil, the all-round size for fields, parks and beaches; the 13x11 in (34x28 cm) FMF coil for open farm fields, wide beach flats and depth on larger targets; and the HF2 9.5 x 5 in (24x13 cm) elliptical high-frequency coil (in this package), 9 to 120 kHz, for small gold and small masked targets. Coil covers ship with every coil. The original DEUS X35 and HF coils do not fit the DEUS II.

Multi-Reactivity runs two different Reactivity settings at once, one per ear, and the DUAL AXIS preset puts a motion discrimination channel in one ear and a non-motion all-metal channel in the other. XP has discontinued the older non-stereo WSA II and WS6 headphones, and a DEUS II built around them cannot run any of this. Check the headset model on any DEUS II listing before you compare prices, because some listings label the headphones wrong, and wear both earpieces: through a speaker or a single ear the stereo features do nothing.

Are the WSA ST headphones waterproof?

No. The WSA ST is rainproof for surface use in rain, wind and beach spray; it is not made for submersion. The DEUS II remote control and the HF2 search coil are IP68 rated and waterproof to 66 ft / 20 m, so the detector itself can go under. A submerged coil needs XP's optional aerial antenna to keep the wireless link, and the dive audio for the DEUS II is the optional XP BH-01 bone conduction headset, also IP68 to 20 m.

Can the DEUS II Gold find gold nuggets, or is it a relic machine with a gold label?

It genuinely prospects. The factory GOLD FIELD program (Prg. 8) is an all-metal prospecting mode with localized ground rejection for highly mineralized ground, and with the HF2 search coil its multi-frequency band shifts from a 40 kHz ceiling on an FMF coil to 89 kHz and beyond, with single frequencies available to 120 kHz. That is the range small nuggets respond to, and the elliptical coil works bedrock cracks and tailings the way dedicated nugget coils do. Its honest limit: deep, large nuggets in extreme mineralization are pulse-induction territory, and XP does not make a pulse-induction detector. The Gold is for the hunter who wants one machine that honestly prospects and then works relic and coin sites the same afternoon.

Is the DEUS II Gold good for colonial homesites and cellar holes?

Yes. This configuration is a strong choice for heavily iron-laden sites such as colonial homesites and cellar holes. The high frequencies of the HF2 search coil respond to small and low-conductive targets, including coins standing on edge, that lower frequencies read as ground or iron. The narrow elliptical profile (5 in / 13 cm wide) separates targets sitting next to nails, and with the WSA ST stereo headphones the Multi-Reactivity and DUAL AXIS features let you work the iron with two channels at once.

What does the HF2 coil give up compared with the FMF packages?

Coverage and the lowest frequencies. A 9.5 x 5 in / 24 x 13 cm elliptical covers less ground per sweep than the 11 in / 28 cm round or the 13x11 in / 34x28 cm FMF search coils, so open fields and beaches with sparse targets go slower. And because the HF2 band starts at 9 kHz, the 4 to 8 kHz end that the FMF programs use on large, deep, high-conductivity targets is not available on this coil. If most of your hunting is open parks, farm fields and beaches, choose a DEUS II package with a 9 in (22.5 cm), 11 in (28 cm) or 13x11 in (34x28 cm) FMF search coil. Do Deus I coils or headphones work with the DEUS II Gold?

No. The X35 and HF search coils, the WS4 and WS5 headphones, and the ORX and original Deus are Deus I products; they do not fit or pair with any DEUS II. The current DEUS II software is V4.1, released by XP in June 2026 and still the newest version on XP's update pages as of our last check. Updates install over USB through XP's online updater, and the remote and the WSA ST must be on the same version or the headphones will not connect. V4.1 brought the Multi-Process refinements, MI-6 pinpointer audio options and improved wireless reliability; Multi-Process itself needs an ST headset, and XP warns that V4.0 must never be installed with a non-ST headset.
